Description

Wondering what artificial intelligence and machine learning is all about? What is its relevance to pathology and more specifically to your practice? How does it work and why do you need to know?

Our presenters, Matthew Hanna, MD, FCAP, and Ronald Jackups Jr., MD, PhD, FCAP, will be answering these questions and more. They will walk you through the concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL). You will learn about the expanding role of AI technology in pathology and how this technology can be used within your own systems. You will be introduced to various AI and ML models used to analyze clinical data and staffing qualifications, as well as training necessary to perform these associated duties. In addition, case discussions regarding the use, validation, challenges, and pitfalls in evaluation of these products will be presented.

Matthew Hanna, MD, FCAP, is an oncologic pathology fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and will continue as an instructor in the subspecialties of informatics and breast pathology in July. Prior appointments include a clinical instructor of pathology informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also completed his Pathology Informatics fellowship. He completed his residency training at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Hanna serves as a member on the CAP Informatics Committee and as an editor for the Journal of Pathology Informatics. He has strong interests in clinical and pathology informatics, as well as breast pathology.

Ronald Jackups Jr., MD, PhD, FCAP, is an assistant professor of pathology and immunology and the fellowship program director of clinical informatics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He is board certified in clinical pathology, transfusion medicine, and clinical informatics. Dr. Jackups’ research involves informatics applications to blood banking and hematology including inventory management and education.

 Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Define the terms artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL).
  2. Identify the role of the pathologist as it relates to AI, ML, and DL in the pathology laboratory.
  3. Identify applications of AI in pathology.
